why are literature classes called english classes you dont study the language english or english culture?

For lite maybe better to be changed for lite maybe better to specify wh language its in as may hv indian chinese french etc.
They call it that because it kind of does study the language English as far as grammar, punctuality, structure and spelling are concerned.
But what I don’t know is why my English course was called “Language Arts”
